There was a moment in time when a certain part of our city became more alive; its aged, layered architecture was met with touchpoints of design that brought it into a new and complimentary light. It was a time of excitement, evident through the response to emerging shops and eateries.

Up uneven stairs led to a new coffee experience—creating space for a moment of solitude in my mind. Nothing stays the same, I thought. There are moments to take notice—how the piercing light dances with the array of glassware, as it clatters on the countertops… or the heady, medley of coffee fragrances, so welcome after a full morning.

It was a time of humility and openness. What unfolded and continued was the introduction to many, many wonderful people and the matters of which they pursued their individual talents.

There was a ceramicist, who spoke about her community and offerings with such warmth, and whose lineage and hands created spaces and experiences of authenticity. There was a boutique owner, sharing the very essence of how he lived, with a keen sense of balance between utility and beauty. And to follow, were numerous others, leading way to a desire to capture and share their presence, their embodiment, and ultimately, their particular point of view.

And is it grew, so did I, in both my perspective and appreciation. I felt connected to this special moment in time—a gift I was only beginning to understand. It was impetus and potent, leading to When They Find Us, and founded on curiosity, respect and appreciation.

Us does not refer to our team of two, but refers to the pivotal and special moment when we discover one another.
